Bulk Ingredient Packaging: Bags vs. Big Bags (FIBCs)
September 2026
Packaging is easy to overlook when sourcing an ingredient, but it is a key part of a well-managed supply operation. Depending on the volume you need, your production process and your storage conditions, the same ingredient may call for a completely different packaging format. Getting it right makes handling easier, saves warehouse space and keeps logistics efficient.
The packaging formats available
At APS Phoenix we offer different packaging alternatives, subject to availability depending on the product:
- Bags starting at 25 lb, for manual handling and smaller or more frequent production runs
- Big bags up to 2,750 lb, for higher volumes and mechanized handling
- Modified atmosphere option in big bags, for products where protecting quality during transit and storage matters
When bags make sense
Smaller bags work well when an ingredient is dosed by hand, used at a low inclusion rate, or consumed slowly. They are easy to move without equipment, simple to rotate in the warehouse, and keep an opened unit small. Bakeries, co-packers and pilot lines often prefer this format, as do food manufacturers running many SKUs from the same raw material.
When big bags make sense
Big bags (also called FIBCs or totes) fit operations with a steady, high consumption and the equipment to unload them, such as forklifts and bulk bag dischargers. Fewer units means less handling labor, less packaging waste and faster receiving. Common examples are pulses like chickpeas, starches like tapioca starch, and pet food inclusions like pea protein concentrate.
Questions that decide the format
- How much do you consume per week, and how fast is an opened unit used?
- What unloading equipment does your plant have?
- How much warehouse space is available, and under what conditions?
- How sensitive is the ingredient to humidity or oxidation during storage?
Packaging is part of the supply, not an afterthought
Supplying is not only about delivering a product. It is also about finding the most convenient way to integrate it into each customer's operation. When you request a quote, tell us your volume, process and storage setup, and we will confirm which formats are available for that ingredient.
